As I thought about my message for September I flashed on all that is shortly ahead of us at St. Luke. Rally Day is fast approaching and then it’s the seemingly way too fast slide into the Holidays. Yes, I just typed those words! This time of year is both exciting and challenging as we anticipate the Fall season and all that it brings. It is interesting that during this season as we refocus from the days of Summer that the hours of daylight are less and less each day. As I was thinking about this I happened to look up at my bookshelf in the home office and saw the title of a book written by Erwin McManus entitled “Chasing Daylight”. The subtitle is “Seize the Power of Every Moment”.
This phrase carries with it a sense of urgency and a call for alertness. As we enter September 2016 we want to be ready for all that God has in store for us. Listen to the Holy Spirit and let your feet be guided from above as you consider how God might use you this month.
“Be dressed ready for service and keep your lamps burning, like servants waiting for their master to return from a wedding banquet, so that when he comes and knocks they can immediately open the door for him.” Luke 12:35
C. S. Lewis, On the Lord’s prayer: If you are interested enough to have read thus far you are probably interested enough to make a shot at saying your prayers: and, whatever else you say, you will probably say the Lord’s Prayer.
Its very first words are Our Father. Do you now see what those words mean? They mean quite frankly, that you are putting yourself in the place of a son of God. To put it bluntly, you are dressing up as Christ. If you like, you are pretending. Because, of course, the moment you realize what the words mean, you realize that you are not a son of God. You are not being like The Son of God, whose will and interests are at one with those of the Father: you are a bundle of self-centered fears, hopes, greeds, jealousies, and self-conceit, all doomed to death. So that, in a way, this dressing up as Christ is a piece of outrageous cheek. But the odd thing is
that He has ordered us to do it.
VBS time is finally here! We are so excited to have 60 children attending VBS in the preschool this year. This week children will be learning God creates, God helps, God loves, God calms, and God sends. Please be praying for this exciting week and that God will touch the kids and families that are attending.
Other exciting news this month, we are getting new flooring! Both the preschool and the youth room will have the flooring replaced this month with vinyl plank, similar to the Pergo in Kurtz Hall but more durable for the wear and tear that the kids put on it. This is a much needed upgrade for the whole building and we are excited to start the new school year with a fresh look.
Dear Friends in Christ,
We have had a wonderful trip to Africa and can hardly wait to share some of our adventures with you. We thank you for your many prayers which have sustained us on the journey. We have had you in our hearts and in our prayers throughout our time away. We trust that God has been at work in you giving you new insights each day.
Our missionaries, Julia and Vincent Leiyoole, are very inspiring people and they are doing strong work for the Kingdom in Kenya. Pray for the leaders in the Arsim Church where they are involved and for the many people touched by their ministry. We will be sharing some stories of their lives, hopes and struggles soon.
We look forward to hearing about what God has been doing in your lives this past month.
Now it is time to focus on VBS! It is going to be a joyful week!
Talk to you soon.
